Diffraction from Materials

چکیده

Diffraction describes the perturbation of the propagation of wave motion when the wave encounters an object with different properties from the medium in which the wave is normally propagating. It is a subset of the more general phenomenon of scattering, for example the scattering of accelerated subatomic particles by nuclei that is explored by nuclear physicists or the scattering of visible light photons from surfaces of objects in a field of view into the retina of our eyes that gives us a visual impression of our surroundings. The utility of diffraction—or scattering— phenomena in general is that it is by the interaction of electromagnetic waves (like light or X-rays) or particles (like electrons or neutrons or He nuclei) that we learn about the constituents of matter and its internal organization. This is of crucial importance to a materials scientist who wishes to understand the fundamental atomic-scale origins of useful physical properties of solids (like strength, deformation and fracture, electrical conduction, magnetic response) that underlie both traditional historical uses and more modern applications in ubiquitous 21century devices. To the extent that moving particles can be considered as having wavelike properties (the “wave-particle duality” in modern physics), the two phenomena of diffraction and scattering are in essence the same and can be treated with the same formalism and with the same result.

Modified statistical dynamical diffraction theory: analysis of model SiGe heterostructures

A modified version of the statistical dynamical diffraction theory (mSDDT) permits full-pattern fitting of high-resolution X-ray diffraction scans from thin-film systems across the entire range from fully dynamic to fully kinematic scattering. The mSDDT analysis has been applied to a set of model SiGe/Si thin-film samples in order to define the capabilities of this approach. For defect-free mat...

Asymmetric diffraction from two-component optical gratings made of passive and lossy materials.

Diffraction with asymmetric enhancement and suppression, and alternating contrast for symmetric diffraction orders is demonstrated from planar two-component optical gratings made of passive/lossy materials. Simulations agree well with the experimental diffraction pattern of the fabricated sample. Our fabrication approach uses simple, standard planar micro/nano lithography employing one photores...

Spectral hole burning and holography . V . Asymmetric diffraction from thin holograms

Thin holograms with novel diffraction properties were created in spectral hole-burning materials. Simultaneously sweeping the frequency of the recording light and the phase of the holograms results in an asymmetric distribution of diffraction efficiency between positive and negative orders. Experiments were performed that demonstrate amplified or attenuated diffraction efficiency with respect t...

Development of Material Analyzing Software Using X-Ray Diffraction

X-ray diffraction is an effective mean for analyzing material properties. This paper developed a new computational software for determining the properties of crystalline materials such as elastic constants, residual stresses, surface hardness, phase components, and etc. The results computed from the X-ray diffraction method were compared to those from the traditional methods and they are in the...

Coherence Effects in Electron Diffraction from Presolar Graphen

This set of analyses examines how coherence effects for coordinated atom-thick structures evidence themselves in diffraction. It also provides an example where this effect may be occurring in nature, through the examination of carbonaceous materials condensed from meteorites. For atom-thick structures, these coherence effects may be seen in diffraction, and they provide additional structural in...
